Virtual Technology Review in Healthcare

Virtual reality (VR), is the ability to interact with a physical object or an environment digitally recreated, which simulates the real-world environment. The technology is commonly used in healthcare settings to enhance the mobility of rehabilitation patients or to provide an opportunity for relaxation and distraction during medical procedures. However, VR is still in its initial stages of adoption and use within the practice of medicine. This article presents an overview of the challenges and facilitators address to the implementation VR in healthcare settings.

The majority of the obstacles identified in this study were related to the adopter system and organizational categories of the NASSS framework, especially the needs of healthcare providers for education and training on VR, the absence of research and evidence on the added value of VR in the context of treatment and the perceived low self-efficacy as well as confidence to use and use VR during patient care. A number of studies suggested the use of behavioral change methods such as education and training, or intervision groups to assist the clinicians in their decision-making processes in relation to VR use.

Facilitators were not as often identified, such as the young age of patients who may be more open to the latest technology and feel more comfortable using it or the fact that VR could create an immersive and interactive learning environment that stimulates the senses as well as fostering an understanding of more complicated scientific concepts. Additionally, the capability of VR to replicate real-world environments like the surface of planets, or the structure of atoms makes it an effective education tool for students to explore and experiment with complex and abstract concepts that might be difficult to visualize in traditional classroom settings.
